The NBA's trade deadline is Thursday, and some big names could move. But don't expect Kevin Garnett to be among them.
Although the Minnesota Timberwolves are
struggling, Garnett is happy where he is and Timberwolves owner Glen
Taylor and vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale
maintain that they aren't interested in moving the former MVP and one
of the league's best all-around players, even though there are plenty
of suitors.
"When I see fit to make some changes in my life,
like always, I will," Garnett said. "It's part of the game. I'm no
stranger to trade talks and the rumors. I won't run from it.
"If Glen Taylor or Kevin McHale feel like they
need a change in the organization, then that's what it is, but when
it's time for me to make a decision for what's best for me, I will. I'm
competitive and try to win games. That's all I'm thinking about. … I'm
not afraid of it. Moving on is not a bad thing if that's what they see
fit."
Garnett is perhaps the most versatile player in
the league. In addition to leading the NBA in rebounding with 12.6 a
game and averaging 22.4 points, 4.5 assists, 1.75 blocked shots, 1.35
steals and shooting 47.7% from the field and 83.5% from the free throw
line, he also isn't shy about doing the dirty work, like setting picks
and scrapping for loose balls.
The Timberwolves lost out in their bid to acquire Allen Iverson
and last month fired coach Dwane Casey, but they come out of the
All-Star break having won three of their last four games and clinging
to the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. They failed to make
the playoffs the last two seasons.
"Kevin has a long way to go in his career," said All-Star MVP Kobe Bryant
of the Los Angeles Lakers. "He's not done. I hear a lot of people talk
about him like his window is shut, closed and gone, but he's still
young (30). He's just an incredible player. He does everything." |
